It was a tough week for some of the top ranked teams in last week’s top-10. The #1 team in last week’s poll, Cornell, drops to #3 after suffering losses to Union and Rensselaer. Before the weekend, the Big Red hadn’t loss since December 1st. That is a lot of hockey without a loss. Losing to both Rensselaer and Union doesn’t look good on the resume but it doesn’t really take away how I feel about this team. They are good with some experience and depth and I expect them to make a run in the tourney.
Notre Dame is back to #1 this week after going 1-0-1 with Penn State this past weekend. The Irish went to Penn State and beat them 5-3 on Friday night and took them down in a shootout on Saturday. It’s no tall task going into Hockey Valley and coming out with a positive record. Penn State plays hard but their crowd brings it night in and night out. Shout out the Roar Zone.
SCSU moves up two places from #7 to #4. At 17-6-1 the Huskies are one of the best teams in the country, there has been no question about that all season. A weekend sweep of a good Nebraska-Omaha put St. Cloud back on track. I don’t think there is a team in the country who wants to get matched up with the Huskies in the tournament. Too much swag. Too much talent.
Clarkson falls from #4 to #7 after a tough weekend where they suffered losses to Quinnipiac and Princeton. Not good for the Golden Knights to suffer two conference losses but it definitely helps that Cornell had a rough weekend as well. Going to come down to the wire in the ECAC and who knows, Harvard could make a late push as well.
Another great weekend for #6 Minnesota State. A weekend sweep over Alaska Anchorage moved them up one spot in this week’s rankings. At 21-7-0 the Mavs are a really good team, it’s just tough to move them rapidly up the rankings when they are playing teams like the 2-17-3 Alaska Anchorage team.
Save of the week:
Army tendy Cole Burns comes in with the save of the week. Holy kick save bud.
Goal of the week:
Goal of the week has to go to Denver’s Henrik Borgstrom. This angle is insane. It’s McDavid esk.
Celly of the week:
Has to go to BU’s Ty Amonte who scored the game winner in the opening round of the Beanpot against Harvard on Monday night. Doesn’t do anything special, but the pure joy almost gives you chills. If you aren’t from or never played in Boston it’s tough to understand what the Beanpot means to kids, but it is very important to us massholes.
